  • Shooting; winter 2012/13

Seeing the first woodcock of the season starting to arrive in decent numbers. Always a pleasant sight whether you have a gun in hand or not.

Huge amount of snipe around too, which is always promising. Never the easiest of things to shoot, but great fun and good to have some snipe feathers for the spider patterns. That's one of the things I love about shooting, not only do you get the sport and food for the table, but you also get plenty of useful feathers for the forthcoming season. Little if anything goes to waste.

    TT.

Nice one Steff, been keeping an eye out for a few weeks, and aint seen one yet. I'm moving house this Saturday, so unlikely to get a chance to walk with the gun for a while anyway, however hopefully January may be a goer. Keep an eye on your inbox!|\

      Aled,
Hope the move is a smooth one.
      and to add,
If by any chance you or anyone else on here gets some mallard this winter and have some Bronze mallard flank feathers to spare(especially the larger sizes) I would be gratefull if you would consider selling me some.
      Many thanks,

Ah now Steffan, i did tell u the night of your wedding, however i'm not surprised you forgot, u had other far more important things on your mind. :>~:.|\ LOL
I am closer to my favourite piece of the Tywi, and i have three larger Woodcock looking woodlands very very close to me. I know who owns one, shot there as a teenager, but not sure of the other 2, need to ask. Would love a walk with you Steff, i've got 11 days off between Christmas Eve and 2nd of January, so how about a chat in a week or two, and perhaps a bit of a walk on some new ground near me in January? One woodland looks awesome!|\

As many of you know, i have two children under the age of 7, and they are very excited. Santa is on his way.......I know how they feel, i can't wait to get out with a gun over the festive period. |\

Well we had a walk on the 28th and got a bit wet, but boy did we enjoy. Biggest thank you goes to Steffan , TWm twm, and their dogs who worked well all day.
Final bag was 4 woodcock, 1 teal, and a snipe.
Lets hope to get out at my corner of Wales before the end of January.
                    Cheers

Cracking day Al, thanks for coming up. We did kill Twm-Twm off for a few days - he has only now recovered :>

God it was wet! But a really enjoyable day. Did have a walk over some areas we didn't get a chance to cover that day a few days later and one section was full of woodcock. Such is life. Good training for Till though, who's still testing me...

                      Catch up soon,

                      Steff.

Diolch bois, had a great day, now i need to have a chat to a few landowners, and be very nice to the Mrs to ensure a day off parental duties! TwmTwm & Steff watch this space. |\

With the season almost been and gone, i was just wondering how people got on?
Personally i haven`t had a bad season on the woodcock even though the weather has not been ideal! Could have done with a fair bit more frost to have made it a really good season, but that`s just the way it goes.
I think one thing i have noticed this season is that without the real hard frost, the dog has taken a bit of a battering this season! This is due to the fact that the trash hasn`t died back as far as most season`s!
Still at least the dog has enjoyed it!
                            Anyone got any other thought`s!

Weather and time constraints have been a problem, been out after woodcock once, and saw 13, doubt i'll go again this year. The cold snap is coming next week!
