  • Investigating work.

Hi all, I know this is a sea trout page but I been watching Oliver Edwards videos on trout fishing and wanted to know if anyone bothers to do kick samples to see what is lurking on the river bed. Or do most just try to guess what flies to use by what can be seen coming off the water?

    Many thanks

    Mintylad.

I usually check when I'm nymph fishing. I don't do an elaborate kick sample but do turn over a few stones to see the type, size and colour of naturals before tying on an artificial. I occasionally do it out of nosiness to check the general health of fly life on a river. If I'm dry fly fishing I tend to just copy what's coming off during the day.

I rarely fish for trout and if i do it will always be with dry fly, otherwise i will be fishing for salmon or seatrout and i never match the hatch with these species, maybe i should for sea trout im not sure, any advice regarding this would be helpfull
