  • back eddy tactics.

    Evening all.

Picture the scene if you will. You're fishing a pool that on the far bank is flowing downstream yet the near side two thirds are in effect flowing back upstream due to the underwater topography of the pool. A fish is showing at regular intervals in the crease between the two flows but is heading down stream. Would it be prudent to fish an upstream cast instead of the usual down and across? Answers on a postcard to the usual address please.

    Many thanks for your thoughts

I know the kinda thing you mean and in every pool and situ like this I've failed to catch the fish that show, these spots are usually deep so I guess a fly fished deep May work?

Go down stream and cast a short line upstream in the conventional way. Just make sure fly lands the right side of the crease!

Cast square, put in a big downstream mend, wait till the line nearly goes straight then start a retrieve, works a treat for me.
