  • A blast from the past

    Hi all

These are salmon flies circa 1950's that have been stored in a sealed box for the last 30 odd years at least. They have all been used on various rivers in Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire and some have caught ST and salmon on more than one occasion. They are in the most part in good condition for their vintage and are entirely useable even now(some of the hooks are still surgically sharp, some will need a tweak.) I do not know the names of any of them but i am sure there are one or more members who will recognise them straight away. I would love to know any of their names. I would like to use some of them on the Teifi and maybe the larger ones on the Towi as i am sure they will be successful(once i master(ha) the art of speycasting that is.) They have been given to me by my father in law (87now) who used them to good effect-when he wasn't poaching that is! All views and comments will be welcome.:>

    cheers

Very nice! |\ thanks for sharing Thom. Love the shape on some of those old hooks and also really nice to appreciate the work that went into some of those flies.

    TT.

        Old aged salmon flies

        Hi all

Yes they were a credit to the original 'flyist'. Hope he or she is still doing some today! Did anyone spot 4 down,3 across with the missing tip/barb? If anyone knows where it went, please send it to me an' i'll weld it back on!! Would like to use one or two of the better preserved ones and wondered if there is a way to protect them before use? Any reasonably possible suggestions or knowledge will be much appreciated.~#

These are true classics, some are a lot older than the 1950s,the gut eyed ones look Victorian, there's a Popham in there and the one second from end top right has Chatterer cheeks and Indian crow, infact there's a lot of flies with Indian crow on em,see how it's been used in the tails, the square looking hooks are called snecks, there's also a very nice looking Baron in there, dressed to catch fish I find these old classics much nicer than any modern looking classic in a frame.

          Thanks for sharing.

            Blast from the past

            Hi Andrew

Thank you for your knowledgeable and kind comments about these flies. Its a great help in identifying their era and type/names. The photo doesnt do them justice really-they are much more colourful in reality. They have been rarely used and stored reasonably well so, most retain their original vibrancy and condition. I was considering using some but i feel due to their age and increasing rarity value, i may just hang on to them a while and put them up for sale(but i will photo them individually and in detail so i can perhaps copy a few for my own use.

            cheers

            Tomtom.
