Nice on trout, great fish, and a fun angle to photograph from! :> Were you targetting the sea-trout? How are the runs over that neck of the woods?

Regarding flies, I will be posting some more in the near future and I hope others will do the same as there's a wealth of knowledge and patterns out there, however, here are a few that have already been photographed, and are patterns that I use quite readily.

A few of the flies I predominantly use on the Teifi, hope they provide some inspiration and help. They are basic, but hey they're what I use:

Deuoni
Hook: longshank 10-6, ken sawada.
Body: silver tinsel
Rib: silver wire
Body hackle: white cock hackle
Wing: black squirrel
Head hackle: dyed blue teal, guinea, or dyed blue grizzle


Deuoni'r diafol
Hook: longshank 10-6, ken sawada.
Body: black floss
Rib: silver wire
Body hackle: black cock hackle, spey type.
Wing: black squirrel
Wing 2: black angel hair
Head hackle: dyed red teal, guinea, or dyed blue grizzle


Surface Deuoni
Hook: longshank 10-6, ken sawada.
Body: silver tinsel
Rib: silver wire
Body hackle: white cock hackle
Wing: 5-6 cdc plumes
Head hackle: spun deer hair


Talysman (red or blue)
Hook: longshank 10-4, ken sawada.
Body: silver tinsel
Rib: silver wire
Wing: black rabbit, squirrel, or arctic fox.
Wing 2: red (or blue) angel hair
False hackle: red or blue rabbit
Eyes: Jungle cock


Insomniac
Hook: longshank 10-4, ken sawada.
Body: black floss
Rib: silver wire
Tail: red rabbit
Wing: black rabbit, squirrel, or arctic fox.
Wing 2: mirage tinsel
False hackle: red rabbit
Eyes: Jungle Cock


Titan
Hook: low water double 10-6, ken sawada
Butt: fl.red thread
Body: black floss
Rib: peacock tinsel
Wing: dyed orange or red peacock
False Hackle: red rabbit or arctic fox
Eyes: Jungle cock


Jambo
Hook: size 10 treble, front hook aberdeen clipped
Body: black floss
Rib: silver tinsel
Wing 1: blue bucktail
Wing 2: mirage tinsel
Wing 3: dyed blue peacock
Head: spun black deer hair


Clipped secret weapon
Hook: size 10 treble, clipped aberdeen hook.
Body: black floss
Rib: silver tinsel
Wing 1: black bucktail
Wing 2: silver angel hair

With re. the sea trout I'm holding, yes, it was targeted.

The biggest sea trout off the broads in the last three years stands at 23lb 6oz.

Not a good photo, but the best I have of it...



The fish was caught by Lee Carver while fishing for pike for the very first time.

It was caught in January with snow on the ground.

Lee is a well known local match angler.

Interesting - never thought of the Broads and sea trout in the same sentence before! How do you fish for them and know where they lie? Do you HAVE rapids on the broads?

We have a terrific run of double figure sea trout on the local R Ouse, which is a short river, quite tidal, with barely a riffle along it's length. Locals fish for them by spinning - I dont bother! Too much open water and I cant work out the lies!

Taken on fly gear - I never 'spin' for sea trout.

20 years fishing the broads, and the last 10 years as a professional guide, has taught me a lot :>

The best places to find/target sea trout on the broads, is at the top of runs/rivers - though they have been know to take on broads.
