I ordered some black dyed bronze mallard and dyed guniea fowl from Artifly yesterday and got my packet an hour ago. Rattled this up but after decided I didnt like that tail so snipped it of what you think? Oh my J/C is crap but Ill make it do!!!

These are prototypes and still havnt decide if theyll hit the water yet!!

heres a few others Im not happy with them as my experimental hackling didnt work they are too long or too stiff in the fibre but Im working on that already!!!

Great dressing, nice one XL50. Really like the first fly - how about a black squirrel wing, then doing the dyed guinea fowl as a head hackle? I bet that would look great. Looks good with/without the tail. Should definitely work.

I know what you mean about the Guinea fowl fibres being too long and the stem being too stiff for the smaller patterns. I tend to use the following, which are much easier to work with and have 'better' sizes:

Cheers TT I tied it with the dyed mallard only as I wanted to try the feathers out. I agree with the squirrel but that would basicly make it a Pearly Stoat but nowt wrong wi that. Again i did play with the idea of a head hackle infrnt of the wing and will defo do if its a hair wing.

sorry, just picked up on this.

Firstly; as for keeping the flies simple; yes, but not only the flies, it's best to keep the fishing simple too, as sea trout fishing is often made far too complicated.

Secondly; sparse flies; yes and no. Sparse flies are needed, of course. However, the key and secret here is variety. You need flies that give a very different profile, silhouette, disturbance etc. You need sparse flies as much as you need something that gives a more solid profile. Both, and in between should be carried to cover all your bases. People get too carried away with just tying sparse flies for sea-trout. Whilst they have their place, there are times when a bulkier pattern and profile will far outfish them whilst also giving you more variety when fishing.

Would definately agree with that! I carry slim dressings and more 'hairy jobs' and tend to use the latter more and more...

Fair points and I can see what you are saying. Though all the waters Ive fished in the past up here in Scotland fish are caught on sparse patterns. This year I have included a few fuller tied flies into my box. As for the above fly which Ive accidently deleted out of photobucket!!! Its stripped and hook re-tied I will let the 1st fly sit for a bit pick it back up and my reaction to it decides whether I tie more or not and I didnt like it I re-tied it with a blue wing, red throat kept the pearl body and re-invented it as a sunk lure.
