Anyone tried using the Monkey for seatrout? I would have thought it would be a great sand eel imitation, but you would presumably suffer from tail 'tweaking'.

Maybe in a snake style would minimise tweaking?

Here is the dressing in case anyone is not familiar with it.

A great summer salmon fly, I particularly like the look of the grizzle variant for seatrout.

If they'll take a flying-c then there's no reason why they won't have a go at that one. However, it does look about the size of some of the sewin I've been catching of late! :>

    TT.

what do you think about fishing it at night though TT? Would you need to shorten the wing a touch? Or maybe put a small treble in the wing, stinger style???

Either way I'm gonna tie up some black and yellow tubes with the peacock herl over the top and some grizzle. Although I've never really had much luck on black + yellow for some reason.

With this weather I'd just be happy to have a night's fishing ~#

To be honest T7 yes I would put something a little further down the fly for sewin, such as a stinger. I would probably shorten the overall lenth a bit, but certainly would be happy fishing it up to 4 inches long or so.

Having said that, I reckon they'd work equally well in the daytime, fished with a nice belly in the line - again, much the same as a flying-c fishing round.

        Worth a chuck.

        TT.

Knocked up a couple of Monkey varients for the seatrout. Tied on a waddington, bright yellow throat hackle, silver mylar body, black squirrel underwing, bit of flash over the top and an overwing of peacock herl. Looks like it might do ok if only the river would drop...

I should add that the wing is 'normal' length, so not really a monkey anymore...

Well it sure does work. The last month of the season i hooked around 20 fish and 12 of them were sea trout ranging between 2 and 6lbs. The monkies i made have a grreen tinsel body instead of silver.

Are you the G Ritchie that caught the 14lb sea trout about 3 or 4 seasons ago?

Yes, I did hear about that fish. The Ugie has produced one or two large sea trout over the years.

yeh there was a run of fish went up last week but i think they were very late autumn fish because there were too many for them to be springers. Are you getting a ticket this year??
